Skin and the Menopause: What's Actually Happening (and How to Support It Naturally)

We often hear from women saying that their skin has changed in menopause. If your skin feels drier, thinner, more sensitive or simply different to the skin you've known for decades, you are in very good company. And you're not imagining it. As a functional health brand, we see skin as a messenger. It reflects what's happening inside, so we'll look at both what you put on it and what supports it from within.

What Oestrogen Does for Skin (and What Happens When It Falls)

Oestrogen is one of the hormones that helps skin stay supple, hold on to water and keep its natural oils in balance. As levels fall through the menopause, the skin changes in several connected ways:

●       Less natural oil: skin makes less sebum, so it can feel tight, dry and rough, particularly on the cheeks, body and hands.

●       A more fragile barrier: the barrier that holds water in and irritants out becomes less robust, so skin loses moisture more easily and can feel reactive.

●       Thinner, less plump skin: the skin's supporting structure, including collagen and elastin, gradually reduces, so skin can look thinner and fine lines may become more visible.

●       Dullness: cell turnover slows, and skin can look less radiant.

●       Itchiness and sensitivity: many women notice itchy, easily irritated skin that was never a problem before.

●       Flushing and warmth: hot flushes can leave skin looking red and feeling reactive.

●       Slower healing and recovery: skin can feel less resilient after irritation or small knocks.

It's Not Just Hormones: The Bigger Picture

Menopausal skin changes rarely happen in isolation. The things that sit alongside them matter too:

●       Sleep: night sweats and broken sleep cut into the overnight repair time skin relies on. (We explored this in our piece on the skin-sleep connection.)

●       Stress: cortisol and skin are closely linked, and midlife often brings plenty of pressure. (See our blog on how stress affects your skin.)

●       Oestrogen works with insulin. As oestrogen declines we become more insulin resistant, blood sugar becomes more unstable and a diet rich in simple carbohydrates (beige food), sugar, caffeine and alcohol can exacerbate this, increasing inflammation, which eventually shows on the skin.

●       Gut health: the gut and skin are in constant conversation. If the gut is imbalanced, you'll eventually see it on the skin.

●       Hydration: it's easy to drink less as the days get cooler, and skin notices. (Our blog on hydration looks at the benefits of getting enough water in more detail.) Think warm water & herbal teas.

How to Support Menopausal Skin Naturally

1. Cleanse gently, and keep it lukewarm

Hot water and foaming, fragranced cleansers strip away the oils skin is already making less of. Choose something mild, use lukewarm water and pat dry rather than rubbing. Synthetic fragrance is a common trigger for sensitive skin, which is why everything we make is free from it. The skin needs tender loving care, nurture & nourish it.

2. Hydrate first, then seal it in

Apply Serum to damp skin, then press a few drops of Face Oil + over the top. The Serum brings hydration; the Face Oil seals it in. It's a simple pairing that suits dry, tight-feeling skin well.

3. Feed the barrier with plant oils

Nourishing plant oils such as: Poppy, Rosehip, Raspberry, Kiwi, Pomegranate, Sea Buckthorn & Arctic Cranberry help comfort dry skin and support its natural barrier. Our Face Oil + is built on this idea: purposeful botanicals that skin recognises and can use, absorbed quickly so skin feels soft rather than oily. Plant oils that actually feed and nourish the skin.

4. Protect your skin from the sun

Thinner skin is more vulnerable, so listen to your body - if it feels good (gentle morning or afternoon light) it probably is, always reach for a hat or shade when the sun gets stronger.

5. Protect your sleep and your stress levels

A cooler bedroom, a calm evening routine and regular sleep and wake times help skin do its overnight repair work. Skincare doesn't only live in a bottle. Skin is a reflection of your internal health: nutrition, hydration, rest, movement and stress all play a part in your glowing complexion.

6. Eat your skincare

Healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts and seeds, plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit, enough protein and plenty of water all give skin the building blocks it needs. Go easy on alcohol, caffeine & refined sugar which can all aggravate flushing and dryness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my skin so dry and itchy since the menopause?

Falling oestrogen means skin makes less natural oil and holds on to less water, which can leave it dry, tight and itchy. Gentle cleansing, layered hydration and nourishing plant oils can help it feel more comfortable..

Why does my skin look thinner and duller?

Oestrogen acts as a biological signal, guiding your cells to build, maintain and repair connective tissue. Annoyingly, as oestrogen declines during peri & meno - pause, collagen can break down faster than it's replaced. Oestrogen also influences hyaluronic acid and helps maintain hydration & elasticity. Oestrogen is the glowing skin hormone and as it declines, many of us notice thinner, duller and skin that starts to sag.

Is natural skincare better for menopausal skin?

Menopausal skin is often drier and more reactive, and many women find simple, fragrance-free formulas built from skin-recognisable ingredients suit it best. Every skin is different, which is why we suggest trying a sample first.

Can skincare reverse the effects of the menopause on skin?

No cosmetic can change your hormone levels. What the right products can do is nourish the skin from the outside, while good nutrition, hydration, quality sleep and daily movement work from the inside.

Which ILOVESKIN products suit menopausal skin?

While every woman is different, depending on needs most women start with Serum and Face Oil +. (Hydrate and Nourish), for deeper overnight treatment NIGHT INTENSIVE is the go to. If you're not sure, take our two-minute 'Find your formula' quiz or try a free sample first, just pay for postage and see what works for your skin.
