Eczema is often framed as an immune system on high alert, and functional practitioners frequently trace that reactivity back to the gut. A compromised intestinal lining, imbalanced gut bacteria, and food sensitivities (dairy, gluten, eggs, and soy are common culprits) are thought to keep the immune system primed for inflammation, which then surfaces as dry, itchy, inflamed patches. Liver load, nutrient gaps (especially essential fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin D), and chronic stress are also considered contributing pieces of the puzzle.

The skin barrier itself is central to this picture, too. Eczema-prone skin tends to have lower levels of healthy lipids and natural moisturising factors, meaning it holds onto water less effectively and lets irritants and allergens in more easily. This weakened barrier is often paired with a less diverse skin microbiome, with Staphylococcus aureus frequently overrepresented on eczema-affected skin, crowding out more protective bacterial species and fuelling further inflammation. Gut permeability, chronic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, and stress-driven cortisol swings are frequently cited as accelerants. Nutrient status (vitamin D and omega-3s again come up often) and alcohol intake are also commonly discussed, since both are believed to influence inflammatory signaling.

Because skin cells are turning over so rapidly, the barrier struggles to organise itself into the neat, protective layers it needs, leading to the thickened, flaky plaques psoriasis is known for. This rapid turnover also disrupts the resident microbiome, research has noted reduced microbial diversity on psoriatic plaques compared to unaffected skin, with certain bacterial groups underrepresented. A less stable microbial community may make it harder for the skin to regulate its own inflammatory signalling, adding another layer to the cycle.

Rosacea

Rosacea's characteristic flushing and visible redness is often linked, in functional circles, to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), low stomach acid, H. pylori infection, and an overactive inflammatory response. Triggers like heat, alcohol, spicy food, and stress are thought to act on a nervous system and blood vessel response that's already primed to overreact. Practitioners also look at demodex mite overgrowth and a weakened skin barrier as pieces that allow irritation to take hold more easily.

A fragile barrier is almost always part of the rosacea picture, many people with rosacea show increased transepidermal water loss, meaning the skin loses moisture faster and reacts more intensely to products, weather, and friction. Demodex mites, which live on everyone's skin in small numbers, are frequently found in higher densities on rosacea-prone skin, and an imbalanced microbiome may make it harder to keep both the mite population and inflammatory bacteria in check.

What it is: redness or flushing, often across the cheeks and nose, sometimes with small bumps.

Acne

More Than a Teenage Hormone Problem

Acne is frequently described as a hormonal and inflammatory condition. Excess androgens increase oil production, but functional practitioners often add layers to that picture: blood sugar spikes and insulin resistance (which influence hormone signalling), gut dysbiosis, dairy sensitivity, and stress-driven cortisol are all commonly discussed as upstream contributors. The idea is that clogged pores and C. acnes bacteria are the visible endpoint of a chain that often starts with diet, hormones, or stress.

The skin barrier and microbiome play a direct role here, too: excess oil combined with a disrupted barrier creates an environment where Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) can overgrow and trigger inflammation within the pore. It's worth noting this bacterium lives on all skin, acne seems to relate less to its mere presence and more to imbalances in which strains dominate and how the immune system responds to them. Over-stripping the skin with harsh cleansers can worsen this cycle, prompting more oil production and further disturbing the microbial balance.

Tinea Versicolor

An Overgrowth, Not Just a Fungus

Tinea versicolour is caused by an overgrowth of yeast (Malassezia) that naturally lives on everyone's skin, it only becomes a visible problem when conditions favour its overgrowth. Functional perspectives tend to ask why that overgrowth is happening: a weakened immune response, excess sebum production, humidity and heat, and underlying blood sugar imbalances are considered common tipping points. Because the yeast is already present on the skin, addressing the internal environment that lets it flourish is often just as important as any topical treatment.

This condition is really a story about microbiome balance rather than barrier damage, Malassezia is a normal, even majority member of the skin's fungal community, and the discolouration appears when it shifts from its usual yeast form into an overgrown, filamentous one. A well-maintained barrier and a diverse surrounding microbial community are thought to help keep this shift from happening, since a stable ecosystem tends to keep any single organism from taking over.

What it is: an overgrowth of yeast naturally found on the skin, causing lighter or darker patches that are often more visible on tanned skin. It interferes with melanin production causing lighter or darker patches on the skin.

What drives it: excess sebum, diet (excess carbohydrates and sugar) and an imbalance in the skin's natural microbiome.
