Your Evening Skin Ritual: Making the Most of the Longer Nights

The clocks went back at the weekend, and with them came darker evenings, an extra hour in bed and, for many of us, a quiet urge to slow down. It's the perfect moment to turn your evening skincare into something more than a chore: a short, calming ritual that helps your skin feel nourished while you wind down.

At ILOVESKIN we see skin as a messenger. How it looks and feels in the morning is shaped by what you do in the evening, and by the sleep that follows. So let's make the most of the longer nights.

Why the Evening Matters for Skin

Skin works to a daily rhythm. During the day it's busy protecting you from sun, pollution and temperature changes. In the evening and overnight, its focus shifts towards restoring and renewing itself.

●       Skin tends to lose moisture more readily at night, so helping it hold on to water before bed is worthwhile.

●       Overnight is when much of the skin's natural renewal happens, so good sleep matters as much as good products. (We explored this in our Sleeptember post on the skin-sleep connection.)

●       Stress and busy evenings keep stress hormones high, and skin feels it. (See our blog on how stress affects your skin.)

●       Central heating and cold, dry air outside add to the dryness this time of year. (We looked at this in our autumn skincare transition guide.)

A Simple Evening Ritual

1. Lower the lights

Dim the lights an hour or so before bed and put screens away. Bright light late in the evening can make it harder to wind down. The brain registers bright light (overhead or screens) as daylight, so lowering light or wearing blue light blocking glasses tells the brain that the day is coming to an end, cortisol drops and melatonin rises and sleep comes more easily.

2. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water

Remove the day without stripping your skin. Use a mild cleanser, lukewarm water (hot water dries skin out) and pat dry with a soft towel.

3. Apply Serum to damp skin

Don't wait for skin to dry. Damp skin takes up hydration more readily, so smooth your Serum on while your face is still slightly damp.

4. Seal it in with Night Intensive

A single pump pressed into clean, damp skin help hold that hydration in. Its nourishing plant oils and butters restore your skin while you sleep and CoQ10 feeds the skin's mitochondrial cells, energising them, algae combats cortisol (stress) and Australian sandalwood calms your skin and your psyche helping you sleep.

5. Add a few minutes of gentle massage

Use light, upward strokes along the cheeks, jaw and neck. It feels wonderful and it's a lovely way to signal to your body that the day is done. (Our lymphatic system blog explains why light touch is best.)

Eat and Drink for Your Evening Skin Ritual

●       Have a glass of water or a herbal tea in the evening so you're not relying on a quick top-up at bedtime.

●       Choose an evening meal with healthy fats, protein and vegetables rather than heavy, sugary comfort food.

●       Go easy on alcohol and late caffeine, which can disrupt sleep and leave skin dry and dull.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should my evening skincare routine include?

A gentle cleanse, a hydrating step on damp skin such as Serum, and a nourishing oil to seal it in. Keep it simple and consistent rather than adding lots of steps.

Should I apply skincare to damp or dry skin?

Damp skin takes up hydration more readily, so applying Serum to slightly damp skin and then sealing it in with a few drops of oil is a good approach.

Does the clock change affect my skin?

The clock change itself doesn't, but darker evenings, colder air and central heating all add to dryness this time of year, so it's a good moment to review your routine.

How long should an evening skincare routine take?

Five to ten minutes is plenty. The aim is a calm, consistent ritual rather than a long list of steps.

Can I try the products before buying full size?

Yes. Free samples are available, simply pay for the postage and packaging, £2 sample vials
